Built in the fifth century BC, Parthenon, an icon of Western Civilization, overlooks the city of Athens from its majestic position. It was built in honor of the goddess Athens, patroness of the city of Athens. It was built as a peripteros a temple surrounded by columns in Doric order. The Parthenon is regarded as the finest example of Greek architecture. “The temple”, wrote John Julius Cooper, “enjoys the reputation of being the most perfect Doric temple ever built. Even in antiquity, its architectural refinements were legendary, especially the subtle correspondence between the curvature of the stylobate, the taper of the naos walls and the entasis of the columns”. Entasis refers to the slight diminution in diameter of the columns as they rise, on the Parthenon, however, the observable effect  is considerably more subtle than on earlier temples. The temple measures 30.86 by 69.51 meters and despite the static rigid form of the building, it is architecture of process and movement.

“In the world over, the very name of our country is immediately associated with the Parthenon”
