THE STORY

Fragkosyka, a fruit commonly known as Prickly pear cacti, are actually everywhere in Greece as they grow almost everywhere.

It is said that the first plants were introduced to Crete and the Aegean islands by the Venetians. They are easy to grow, even on rocky land and in Crete they are commonly used as natural fences for the olive trees.

Their fruits are oval in shape, and can range in colour from yellow and light green to orange, pink, and red, depending on the variety and ripeness. They are really delicious and very nutritional. Scientists claim that their consumption offers health benefits, such as lower cholesterol levels, improvement of the digestive process, decrease of the risk of diabetes, boost of the immune system, stimulation of bone growth, strengthening of the blood vessels, prevention of certain cancers, reduction of the risk of Alzheimer’s, aid in weight loss attempts, and elimination of inflammations.

The best way to enjoy them is to eat them chilled and according to the Cretan tradition, accompanied by a glass of Raki. Just be very careful: peel them using a knife and a pair of thick gloves.
